After a terrific sophomore season, Damian Lillard only played 10 games due to a broken foot that forced him to miss his junior season and take a redshirt year. Now back for his redshirt junior year, Lillard has exploded onto the national scene as one of the best scorers in college basketball.

Lillard’s value and strengths are on the offensive end where he’s able to be a lethal scorer, partially because of his terrific efficiency. To put Lillard’s scoring ability and efficiency into perspective, he’s producing at a very similar rate to Jimmer Fredette last year. Lillard is very reliant on his jump-shot, he is effective on mid-range and deep shots, but has the ball-handling skills and physical tools to get the rim and has done so at a good rate. He has shown the ability to finish once he gets there as well as hit free-throws at an excellent clip if he gets fouled. Lillard’s skills as a pure point guard aren’t called upon much and he hasn’t proven he can be a pure point guard but that’s not likely what he will be called upon to do in the NBA.

Defensively, Lillard has solid physical tools and has shown a willingness to play defense. Lillard has enough lateral quickness to stay in front of most guards and has good size/length to guard bigger guards. Lillard’s strength isn’t his defense but he won’t be a liability on the defensive end like most prolific scoring guards.

The main attraction regarding Lillard has been and will be his ability to put the ball in the basket. Lillard will bring up comparisons to Jimmer Fredette and Stephen Curry because of the small-school factor combined with the terrific scoring numbers but doesn’t possess the overall talent that either of them had that made them lottery picks.
